Classes and Workshops

Announcing classes and workshops for the spring. These will be held at Art Mundo in the Underground at The ArtBank, 111 Orange Avenue, Fort Pierce, Florida. If you would like additional information about any of these, please check them out at Art Mundo's website.

Mat Cutting Basics - Thursday, April 14 from 1 to 4 pm. $25 payable at the workshop or before, online at Art Mundo.

Participants will learn to use a mat cutter to cut a single and a double window mat and mount the artwork within the window mat. Additional matting options will be covered as well as how to cut a mat without a mat cutter.

Dremel Basics - Saturday, April 16 from 10 am to Noon. $35 payable at the workshop or before, online at Art Mundo.

Participants will learn the basics of using a dremel tool, including a discussion of the different attachments for various wood and metal projects with hands on excercises. Each participant will need to bring his or her own dremel kit including bits. Dremel kits can be purchased at hardware stores, building supply stores or Walmart. All other materials provided. This class is designed for 18 years and older.

No "vintage" dremels please.

Paste Paper Collage - Tuesday, April 19 from 9 am to 3:30 pm. $75 payable at the workshop or before, online at Art Mundo.

The class is from 9am until 3:30pm
with a 30 minute lunch. Participants
will spend the morning discovering and executing paste paper. Instruction will include layering, pattern and texture, color, pigment transparency and paste variations. After lunch, the participants will create a collage using the papers painted in the morning. Discussion will include color relations, surface build-up, shape and repetition in terms of composition. This class is designed for ages 16 and up.

This year's Art Mundo Calendart art calendar event is right around the corner!! We have 24 amazing artists making up 24 calendars.

No Two Calendars Are Alike!

Each calendar has 12 original pieces of art, removable from the month page and suitable for framing. Chances to win may be purchased from Art Mundo during regular hours at The ArtBank (Tuesdays and Thursdays - 1:30 to 5:00 pm, Saturday mornings - 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and every Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, by emailing artmundo.org@gmail.com or on the evening of the Calendart Party.

The Calendart Party is November 13, 2010 from 7:00 to 9:30 pm at Art Mundo in The Underground at The ArtBank. Light fare will be provided.

I've noticed lately that a lot of people, that includes ME, have been somewhat dormant. Is it laziness, boredom, lethargy . . .

I know I haven't been in the studio for fun for a looooooonnnng time. My excuses?

The place is a mess.

It's cold outside.

Which shouldn't really matter except that 1. I get "dormant" when it's cold outside and perhaps more importantly 2. My studio is a screened in carport, a lovely space really, but cold when it's cold. And then I get dormant and no way am I going out there to straighten up when it's cold.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Because of my friends Lucky Eddie and Miss Vickie, I've started following "The Mud Show Diaries", a blog about life on the road in a small traveling circus. This circus is the Kelly Miller Circus.

Following this large extended family appeals to me because of my vagabond years as a cruising sailor. When we go to the circus, we are entertained, we enjoy, we go home. Rarely do we think about how life is on the road, who puts up the tents, how are the monumental logistics of moving something this big every day accomplished. Who are the people who make up this mud show?

Valérie Berta Torales gives us an eloquent picture of those very things, plus life on the road with a young family. This is a must follow.

The rules of this award say I am to state 7 facts about myself and then give this to 7 people. And, as Diantha says, "Such a fun way to bring more awareness to other blogs!"

Here are my 7 facts about myself:

I'm always up for learning and trying new things. And adventure. I was so disappointed to not be on the Kon Tiki with Thor Heyerdahl.
I have 6 cats by various defaults, all of them involving my daughter. I love them all. (I love my daughter, too!)
I lived on a sailboat for 11 years and am currently working toward acquiring another one, Pearson Triton, older model, close to Florida. Anyone hear of one, let me know!
I grew up in the Midwest and had an "Opie Taylor/Leave It To Beaver" childhood.
In one of my former lives, I was blind.
If I could I would live in a house with no walls, where the interior meets nature unencumbered. My next big project will be to build a home that is totally off the grid.
I love color, vibrant, vivid, life-encompassing color.

Which is one of the many reasons Diantha and I are friends.

Through Valerie's eyes, I am learning what life on the road is like for my friends, Miss Vickie and Luckie Eddie, who ran away to the circus in mid-life. What adventurers! It gives a whole new perspective to the grueling schedule of a small circus traveling across America. It will be enlightening.

Loving small spaces, I realized this would be

the perfect on-site studio for me.

So I rented it!

Here it is now, with my preliminary set up.

I'm positive it will evolve as I utilize my studio

away from home.

More Bronze

Two last photos of the bronze casting series.

This photo is out of context.

This is actually the first part of the process.

These forms are wax images of the original prototype sculpture.

They have been dipped several times in the slurry.

The yellow forms will become white after the wax

has been melted out and they have been baked.

The flared base is actually the cup into which the bronze is poured.

The forms in front are over sized roses for

a sculpture that Pat is currently creating.

These will be in the next pour.

Because of the strange green-glowing flowers and organic shapes,

the wax room looks like some alien greenhouse "en Provence"!

This is a finished bronze from the pour in the last post.

The head shape can be seen in several of the photos in that post.

This bust was cast in 3 pieces, then welded back together and fine tuned.

The patina (surface color) is added.

The sculpture is waxed and ready to go.

Bronze Casting

The amazing and mysterious world of bronze casting!

This photo series is from last week at Shadetree Studio, a local fine art foundry/studio owned and operated by artist Pat Cochran. I've mentioned him before. He's the same artist who created the recycled sculpture a few posts ago. Pat is a prolific artist whose sculptures grace the Treasure Coast landscape.

The furnace is fired up and the bronze ingots are pre-heating.

Pat places an ingot into the crucible

through the hole in the top of the furnace.

Suiting up.

Skimming impurities from the surface of the molten bronze.

The molds, pre-heating to around 1400 degrees F.

The molds have been covered with sand.

This helps keep them hot until they are filled with bronze.

The tinfoil covers keeps the sand out of the molds.

Removing the crucible from the furnace.

Pouring the bronze into the molds.

Pouring the molten bronze, close up.

The bronze is approximately 2200 degrees F.

The molds after they have been filled. At this point

the bronze has already solidified, but is still red hot.

Replacing the crucible into the furnace for the next pour of the day.

Carrying the very hot molds out to the cool down area.

While the bronze is no longer red hot, it still is too hot

to handle directly.

Cooling down.

Still VERY hot, the molds will cool down more

before the shell is knocked off the bronze.

I love watching a bronze pour and consider myself lucky

to have had the opportunity numerous times.

I think the big draw for me is that unbelievable molten

metal that is the most indescribable orange.

This sculpture in Fort Pierce, FL was constructed on the site from recycled metal brought in by members of the community. The top structure acts as a vane, turning in the wind. On the front of the vane is a propeller which powers a battery that runs lights to light up the globe. On the top of the vane are solar powered lights which also light the sculpture. The words on either side say FT PIERCE FL. The sculpture was built in one weekend as part of the Green event that was held by A. E. Backus Museum. The artist is Patrick Cochran.

Seems like I bought them yesterday. Time flies!

Holiday Fruit Basket
This wire basket is from a series created by Fort Pierce
artist Anita Prentice. Not only is it fabulous filled with fruit
on the counter, it also looks unbelievable displayed on
the wall as the art object it is.

In the next few days, these items will all be put away until next year, except for the Anita Prentice basket which will keep its job of corralling the fruit.

The Vero Beach Art Club Art Trails studio tour was a huge success at my studio. I'm assuming every studio had the same experience. We had lots of visitors and amazing comments. I've placed photos of the studio all decked out for the day. This post wouldn't be complete without a heartfelt thanks to my five Artcateers who helped me pull this all together: Donna, Marie, Linda, Anita and Becca You gals rock! And thanks to my son, Tom, too, for his help and cooperation.

Art Trail is an artists' studio tour in Vero Beach, Florida presented by the Vero Beach Art Club. The proceeds benefit the scholarship fund. The date is Saturday, December 13, 2008.

I have the privilege of being one of the 10 artists this year. My only regret is that I won't be able to see the studios of the other 9 artists. Tickets can be purchased from me and from the Art Club at the Vero Beach Museum. For more information, click here.

This is also a great opportunity to pick up unusual and creative gifts for Christmas.

Fellow artist and business partner Anita Prentice and I held a workshop at Heathcote Botanical Gardens. Participants painted pvc pipe as part of an art installation in the bamboo garden. Photos of the installation will follow soon. This workshop was a great opportunity to study color, to dismiss fears about creativity and making mistakes and to be a part of a larger art installation.

Walking The Old Bridge versus The Snake Lady

These are two pieces I created for the featured artist exhibit at The Gallery in Beaufort, SC. The first, "Walking The Old Bridge", is more structured and planned. The second piece, "Snake Lady Gets the Big Banana", is more spontaneous, coming directly from the myriad of paper pieces on the work table. Hands down, more people liked the structured piece. In fact it was probably the most popular of 17 pieces. I personally like the innocent spontaneity of the Snake Lady and the fact that she got the Banana. ? What makes us like one thing better than another? Personal aesthetics? ?

A Bird In The Hand, the latest project. A collaborative piece with Anita Prentice. The sculpture is part of WOW 2 (Without Walls 2), an outdoor sculpture show in St. Lucie County, Florida. The show contains 30 sculptures by 33 artists from all over Florida.
